CHOCHMAT HALEV BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Learn about the Board Nomination Process

Read our Board-adopted policies
The Board is a dedicated group of volunteers who meet monthly in a public meeting to serve the Chochmat HaLev community and ensure that our beloved institution thrives and is financially sustainable.  Board members are elected at an annual meeting of Chochmat members and serve two year terms.

The officers of the Chochmat HaLev Board serve on the Executive Committee ("EC") with the Rabbi and the Executive or Interim Director.  The EC meets once or twice a month outside of Board meetings to assist in the running of our community.  We encourage all Chochmat members to get to know their Board representatives, and to contact us with any concern.

2013 Chochmat HaLev Board Members

Janet Falk

Picture
Janet Falk has been actively involved in CHL since 2003, attending services, meditation, and classes.  She previously served as Board President from 2006-2008.   Janet has been involved in Jewish Renewal for 25 years.  The last few years have been a time of substantial growth in her spiritual life and practice, which she attributes to being part of the Chochmat community.  Janet's professional life has been the development of nonprofit affordable housing since 1975 and she has served on several nonprofit boards.

Neil Goldberg [Chair, Communications Committee]

Picture
Neil Goldberg is a designer of products, services and experiences through disciplines encompassing industrial design, graphic design, software design and architecture. He sees his work with CHL as part of his practice – to help bring alignment between our beloved community’s purpose, its organizational structures and the way we express ourselves in the world. His goal is to build CHL into a vibrant, thriving center for renewal of Jewish spiritual ethics and culture that can nurture its members and through them, make our world a better place.

Kevin Morgan, Treasurer

Picture
Kevin Morgan [Treasurer, Executive Committee, Fundraising Committee] first started coming to Chochmat HaLev in Spring of 2004 and describes his first experience at Chochmat as a homecoming, “returning to the village I never knew before”. He continues to deepen his Jewish practice with the services, classes and lessons offered by the teachers and friends at his spiritual home. Kevin led the Strategic Planning process in 2005 and 2006 that created the new organizational structure for the community. Kevin has been active in other ad hoc committees at the request of the Board of Directors.

Nancy Shaw

Picture
Nancy set out in 2009 to explore her Jewish identity after a lifetime of no affiliation, and quickly discovered Chochmat (and met her husband) by way of Wilderness Torah. Chochmat has since become a treasured source of spirituality and community. Nancy, a typical Berkeley Jew-Bu, also practices meditation and yoga. She brings nonprofit experience including serving on a nonprofit board, as an executive director, and working for a grant-making foundation. She holds an MBA in sustainable business and currently consults to socially-responsible businesses and nonprofits. She also indulges her passion for family history through her company, Who's Your Daddy Genealogy.

Jill Nagle

Picture

Jill Nagle [Chair, Membership/Community Building Committee] began her journey into Jewish Renewal in 1993 as a founding member of Queer Minyan, a lay-led chavurah composed of queer Jews seeking to learn or relearn Judaism with and from one another, with a feminist and queer focus.

After exploring many other larger Jewish Renewal communities, she landed happily at Chochmat HaLev where she has been davening for the last decade or so. She's a published author, mama to a son with Asperger's, and a longtime active member of Bay Area dance communities.

Jill seeks to weave together models of restorative social justice, multicultural alliance building, sexual diversity and celebration within and beyond Jewish community. She also loves to create yummy desserts whenever possible for anyone who will eat them.

Larry Peck

Larry Peck
Larry Peck is new to the Chochmat community, having recently migrated from the east coast in search a progressive culture that aligned with his own internal moral compass.  Finding Chochmat was like finding True North. He looks forward to contributing his skills in accounting, process improvement, and team-building to the community.  For income, Larry heads up the financial team at a locally based greentech company.  For fun he jumps rope, bakes cookies, rides his bike, and does cartwheels in the halls. He joins the Chochmat community with his partner, Melina, and two children, Patience (17) and Gabriel (11).

Daniella Salzman, Secretary

Picture
Daniella Salzman [Secretary, Executive Committee, Fundraising Committee, Meditation Committee] has been deeply inspired by her work for social justice in communities at home and abroad, her work lobbying for national health care, her studies in dance expressive arts therapy at the Tamalpa Institute, and her retreats on spiritual awakening with Adyashanti, Amma, and Rabbi David Cooper. As a teacher, Daniella has taught English at UC-Berkeley Extension, instructs in the Teen and Family Program at Spirit Rock, and leads expressive arts workshops in various settings.
