Chochmat HaLev Community Page

Chochmat HaLev is music.  Chochmat HaLev is meditation. Chochmat HaLev is Torat HaLev School, holiday celebrations, Shabbat services, and more.  Most of all, Chochmat HaLev is the community of people who make all this happen.   We invite YOU to become more involved is our spiritual, caring, Jewish Renewal community.

WHAT DOES COMMUNITY LOOK LIKE?

Community looks like a double-baby naming.   Anyah Schachter-Brooks and Lily Tertes surrounded by family and love, with Rabbi SaraLeya, at the Chochmat HaLev Morning Blessing Service in January, 2012.

Chochmat HaLev needs your financial support.  We are in the middle of an EMERGENCY FUND DRIVE. Visit our DONATIONS page and our MEMBERSHIP page now.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

SANCTUARY CEILING EMERGENCY

April 27 update:  The plans for fixing the roof structure of the Sanctuary were finished and sent to the City of Berkeley for review and permits.  It will be a few more weeks before the city finishes and then probably months of extensive construction.  Our contractor will build an entirely new truss and will have to take the roof off the building to install it.  It will be a huge construction project.

Thanks to many many generous donors we have raised $80,000 so far in our emergency fund drive.

We need to raise at least $10,000 more  by May 15 to sustain our current offerings and start the new fiscal year on sound financial footing. If you haven't contributed this year, please consider making a donation.

February 19 update:  With the help of amazing volunteers in our community, during the past two weeks we have had several inspections of our sanctuary ceiling by structural engineers and others.  We still do not know the full scope of the needed work or what it will cost, but should have this information soon.  We did receive one piece of good news when we learned last week that there is no asbestos in the ceiling.  A blessing.

February 1 update:  Our holy sanctuary ceiling is falling down and it is unsafe for anyone to be in the sanctuary.  No other part of the building is affected.  As of now, all scheduled events, except for Saturday morning services on February 3, will take place in other rooms at Chochmat.  Our February 3 service, when Shira Fitzpatrick-Zimet is called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah, will take place at Kehilla Community Synagogue, 1300 Grand Avenue, Piedmont, CA 94610.   We are currently in the process of getting estimates and will post an update here when we know more.

Our membership came together for an enthusiastic and thoughtful Chochmat HaLev annual meeting on Sunday, January 22, 2012.  We even had a chance to have a taste of Torah together. The report on the meeting can be downloaded here:

Annual Meeting and Board Elections January 22

Dear Members of Chochmat HaLev:

Our annual meeting to elect the 2012 Chochmat Board of Directors will take place on Sunday, January 22 from 10:30am - 12:30pm at Chochmat. This is an opportunity to get an update on our community, connect with the membership and Board leadership, and elect our board members for 2012.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

New Board members to be elected for a two-year term

The following individuals were recommended to serve on the Board by the Nominations Committee.  They are listed below, along with their answers to the question "Why are you interested in being on the Chochmat HaLev Board of Directors."

Neil Goldberg:  I love this community through which Orr, my son is doing Bar Mitzva. Another community we are part of through Orr, his school since kindergarden, Windrush, is in bankruptcy and its survival threatened. I see the financial difficulties challenging Chochmat, and want to do what I can to help prevent a similar disaster in this beloved community.

Adam Gutride:  I would like to see CHL get through its current period of financial uncertainty and become a strong, stable congregation in which my son Solomon is raised.

Jill Nagle:  Chochmat HaLev is one of my true loves! I have been considering board membership for a while. Of late, I have been strongly drawn to crafting programming for CHL, around three areas: sexual diversity within the community, deep philosophical inquiry into truth and belief, and dance meditation. I have connections within the Jewish community and beyond to create these programs. I would very much like to bring my passion for this community, and my gift for creating cutting-edge experiences of inquiry and deepening, to the board in 2012.

Larry Peck:  I am committed to progressive Jewish values as expressed in the Chochmat Halev mission and vision, and I am willing to take on a leadership role within the Congregation. Also, I want to be involved.

Current Board Member to be re-elected to a new two year term:
Jeff Fry

Other continuing Board Members whose terms are not up this year:

Chochmat HaLev is thriving in so many ways. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, January 22 as we officially launch our precious community into 2012.
