Shabbat B’Shalah (Exodus 13:17-17:16)
Shabbat Shirah – Shabbat of Song – reading of the Song of the Sea
Tu b’Sh’vat – New Year for Trees
Middah for the month of Sh’vatZ’hirut - Watchfulnesss

RSL_Ron__s_HHDZ’hirut calls us to toward impeccability, to being on the continual path of self-monitoring.

The RaMHaL, Rabbi Moshe Hayim Lutzzatto, teaches in his classic text, Path of the JustMesilat Yesharim: One's task is to examine one's actions every day and to thus avoid, not only bad habits, but also choices that are not in the best interest of one's soul.

The holyday of Tu B’Shvat honors the sparks of aliveness that are hidden deep in the earth, waiting to sprout with the warming of spring.  Similarly, our practice of self-observation finds the seedling of truth and goodness that is often hidden deep inside our heart.  With attention, the sprout takes root in our very being and is fed by our desire to be more careful and precise in our relationships with each other and the world.  As the flowers blossom and fruits form, so our inspiration, learning and teaching mature and we can share the blessing of our path with each other.

Just as the growing plant splits open the seed, this Shabbat we read the story of the Splitting of the Sea that happened just seven short days after the Israelites departed Egypt.  New potential for change and liberation are born in the rending of what was once closed and (seemingly) impenetrable.  And so, like the Israelites, we celebrate this birthing of possibility with song and dance.

Let our hearts crack open like the seed and the sea.

Let us receive the blessing of the New Year of the Trees and the blessing of the Shabbat of Song as we continue on our path of perfection and repair.

Let us pray for courage as the heart experiences new levels of self-understanding, vitality and integrity.

January 29 at 6pm

Join us in celebrating the New Year of the Trees while supporting Haiti relief efforts and Chochmat!
Tu B'Shevat is the celebration of the New Year of the Trees. In Jewish time, it marks the moment of ascent from the depths of winter into new life--the time when the sap of the tree begins to rise up from its roots in the earth. For the kabbalists of old, Tu B'Shevat was not just a time to express gratitutde for the gifts of the earth, but also a time to celebrate the cosmic flow of life from its divine source--the Sephirotic Tree of life.
Join us for a taste of paradise as we journey through the Four Worlds, contemplate the mysteries of the cosmic Tree of Life, and reflect on our relationship with the earth.

The Spirit of Integrity: A Study Group on Kabbalistic Mussar with Estelle Frankel

This study group is focused on tikkun ha’middot-building spiritual muscle through cultivating the soul’s divine attributes. Each of the middot, like facets of a diamond, reflect aspects of our essential being—our potential to be whole.  As we polish and perfect these soul qualities we deepen in our connection with the divine.  This foundational inner work, shared by both Jewish mystics and Mussar masters alike, helps ground our spiritual aspirations, increase our joy & authenticity, and deepen our personal integrity.

Each month we will focus on a particular middah. A study packet and recommended reading list will be given out that that explore how to cultivate this soul quality. While we hope you will take the entire series, it is possible to sign up on a month by month basis.
