Parashat T’rumah: Exodus 25:1-27:19
Middah for the month of Adar: Joy
This week two spiritual duties are presented, each a vessel for the other.
V’asu li mikdash v’shakanti b’tokham - And they will make a sanctuary for Me, so I can dwell in their midst (Exodus 25:8).
Our weekly parashah describes the generosity of heart required to build the Tabernacle. When the verse above is read carefully, we see that Divinity specifically requests that we create dedicated holy space so that The Infinite will have a home in our midst (the text does not state “so I can dwell in it” - in the Sanctuary itself). Today our text leads us to ask this question: how, where and when can I create space and time for Sanctity to have an abode, a hold, in this world?
Mi-shenikhnas Adar, marbin b’simhah - when one brings in the month of Adar, one increases joy (Babylonian Talmud 29a).
This is the month of Adar, the 12th month of the biblical calendar. The essence of Adar is to consciously increase joy in the world. Purim, Adar’s full-moon holy day, celebrates the story of Ester and Mordechai, challenging us to find the Divinity hidden beneath surface appearances. True joy, our Hasidic rebbes teach, is the experience of the Divine Presence in each moment and situation.
So, the task of Adar is to expand the present moment through our Awareness of the godliness in the unfolding of the Now - the experience of true joy. The task from the Torah portion is to create a Sanctuary for the unfolding of Divine purpose, using the elevated Consciousness and open-heartedness we receive from cultivating this joy. Joy becomes the vessel for Sanctuary, and Sanctuary the vessel for even more joy.
With blessing as we walk this twofold path as a wise-hearted community,
Rabbi SaraLeya

The Spirit of Integrity: A Study Group on Kabbalistic Mussar with Estelle Frankel
This study group is focused on tikkun ha’middot-building spiritual muscle through cultivating the soul’s divine attributes. Each of the middot, like facets of a diamond, reflect aspects of our essential being—our potential to be whole. As we polish and perfect these soul qualities we deepen in our connection with the divine. This foundational inner work, shared by both Jewish mystics and Mussar masters alike, helps ground our spiritual aspirations, increase our joy & authenticity, and deepen our personal integrity.
Each month we will focus on a particular middah. A study packet and recommended reading list will be given out that that explore how to cultivate this soul quality. While we hope you will take the entire series, it is possible to sign up on a month by month basis.
